Officer Dustin Fowler - Animal
Hello, I am Officer Dustin Fowler. My partner is a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mixed breed named Animal, born in July 2011.
I began my law enforcement career in March 2004 working as a Protective Services Officer for the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office. In October 2005 I began my work as a Sheriff’s Deputy. I transferred into the K9 Unit in June, 2007. I am presently a State certified K9 Training Officer and an internationally certified Judge in both patrol dog and detector dog disciplines.
I am very passionate about the K9 Unit and about training service dogs in general. In addition to being a UPD K9 Training Officer, I have had the opportunity to train service dogs with police agencies throughout the State of Utah and beyond. I have also had the honor to train and handle four of my own service dogs. Police dogs are a great asset to the Unified Police Department and to the communities that we serve. A well trained K9 makes our work more effective, efficient and it makes our jobs much safer. It significantly reduces the man-hours and resources needed to locate: people, drugs, and criminal evidence. I truly believe that a dog is man’s best friend. We see our K9 partners more than our human families because they are with us both at work and at home. Our dogs ARE members of our families. I have truly been blessed with my assignment to the K9 Unit.
Animal is still very young but he has been extraordinarily successful. He is highly driven but he is also very social. He loves going to work every day but also loves to spend time with the family. Animal has a very enthusiastic, up-beat temperament and has by far been the best dog I have ever worked. He is definitely a quick study!
My partner has been directly responsible for the capture of numerous criminals and the seizure of large amounts of illegal drugs. Street work is our passion and first priority but I also enjoy putting my dog’s skills up against the best K9 teams in the industry. Recently Animal and I entered our first national police dog competition in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was our first competitive event together. I didn’t know how well we would do but I got a pleasant surprise. Animal and I won first place in both K9 Agility and Tactical Obedience! That makes me even more proud to be Animal’s partner.
“He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.” --Author Unknown.
